Kuskokwim River Sockeye Salmon – Phase 2

Synopsis:The importance of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) as a subsistence resource in the Kuskokwim River is growing. The ability of fishery managers to balance competing goals of ensuring adequate escapement for long-term sustainability and maximizing yield is hindered by a lack of adequate escapement monitoring and annual estimates of abundance. This project continues operation of the Telaquana Lake weir to assess annual variation in escapement, run timing, and age-sex-length (ASL) composition. Additionally, the feasibility of using genetic stock identification (GSI) for estimating total returns of Kuskokwim River sockeye salmon will be evaluated. This project continues work begun in AKSSF project 45920.
